Diplomatic Reception for Envoys to the Korean Empire
The Diplomatic Reception for Envoys to the Korean Empire is an event where a historical play is staged to shed light on the diplomatic relations of the Korean Empire. In addition to a reenactment of a ceremony and banquet organized for foreign ministers to have an audience with Emperor Gojong in 1900, there will be performances by a military band, geommu (sword dance), and sajachum (lion dance).
Program Information
This is a reenactment of the day when Gojong, the Emperor of the Korean Empire, met with foreign diplomats. The Korean Empire endeavored to consolidate its position as an independent nation by building diplomatic relations on a par with other countries amidst the rapidly changing global situation as a result of modernization.
The banquet featured a combination of elements of traditional Korean and Western cultures, and performances were also held for the guests. In addition to the marching and dancing music performed by a modern military band, splendid and dynamic traditional Korean performances such as geommu (sword dance, which was a royal court dance), sajachum (lion dance, where performers appear wearing lion masks), and pogurak (a performance where a ball is thrown into a hole), left the foreign diplomats in awe.
