Korea Traditional Crafts and Architecture School
The Korea Traditional Crafts and Architecture School contributes to the spread of traditional crafts by systematically providing practical education and training in the field of traditional crafts. It offers regular courses and short-term courses.
The regular courses consist of basic education, research, and professional training and are operated from March to December every year. Classes are held for three hours a week for 32 weeks, with about 10 students in each class.
Short-term courses are offered twice a year. The duration of each course varies depending on the subject, from six hours a week for five to seven weeks to three hours a week for 10 to 12 weeks. The same courses are not offered every time.
Taught by the Best in the Field
Students are taught by people designated as intangible cultural heritage by the state, cities, and provinces, certified instructors for the transmission of cultural heritage, people who have completed the necessary training, master artisans and craftsmen, and artists who have won a major prize at the Korea Annual Traditional Handicraft Art Exhibition.
Regular Courses
- Textile crafts : knotting, quilting using colored threads, embroidered bojagi, traditional embroidery, and needlework
- - Carpentry : gakja, somok, and soban
- - Lacquer craft : najeon chilgi (mother-of-pearl lacquerware) and otchil (lacquerware)
- - Metal craft : jangseok
- - Traditional painting style : dancheong
- Basic education (1st year) → Research (2nd year) → Professional training (3rd year)
- Courses available: Woodcarving, lacquerware, embroidery, ipsa (Korean traditional silver or gold inlaying), quilting, needlework, somok, etc. (subject to change)
- Operation of introductory and advanced courses (beyond the final part of the regular course)
