Cultureal Property Investigation, and Research Center

Consultation Survey

After finishing the field survey, all records, relics, and samples must be moved indoors, and through restoring and scientific conservation on excavated relics, they must be kept safely after finding out the exact shapes, manufacturing techniques and their usage.

Cultural Property Investigation and Research Center established the Conservation Science Team in 1997 and has been prudential to restore and preserve the excavatedrelics; and metal relics go through a precise preservation process such as X-ray non-destructive investigation, and all excavated relics are safely reverted to the country.

Metal Relics Conservation Process

The types of metal relics are varied, including gold, bronze, silver, iron, and copper, and because they are buried for many years, they are corroded and damaged due to the physical and chemical reactions of the surrounding environment, temperature, and humidity. It is important to give emergency treatments to the excavated metal relics to minimize damage due to the rapid environmental changes.

Replication of Relics

Replication of relics is to produce one or more separate objects of the only historical and cultural relics of cultural property by using the same or similar materials for edu-cational and academic data

How to Replicate Relics

[Contacting Method]

  • Use various parting agents like tin foil, silicone and plaster and mold out the surface of the relics.
  • There is a risk of physical and chemical damage to the relics as the work is done directly on the surface of the relics, but minute details of the surfa-ce can be obtained for precise replication.

[Non-contacting Method]

  • Use 3D scan or plastic art technique on the relics to create the shape
  • The relics are safe due to no contact with them, but the accuracy of replic-ation falls.

Order of Replication

Contacting Method (Actual measurement → Strengthen the parting agents → Make the silicone mold → Make replicated relics → Revise and supplement → Match the colors)
Non-contacting Method (Actual measurement → 3D Scanning → 3D Printing (RP production) → Make the silicone mold → Make replicated relics → Revise and supplement → Match the colors)
